Imagine if just 75% of the population could write and read effectively, coherently, and efficiently. The young and old could then formulate an opinion that could be acted upon, articulated, and thus, change becomes a real possibility despite parental and school indoctrination and bias.
Literacy starts at home as a child and hopefully continues into grade school. The parents and teachers have the power to make sure that their children can write and read or the likelihood of any form of success and achievement is diminished.
Literacy start early in life and continues until life ends. I really didn’t learn to read or write until I was in my twenties.
Prior to that and because I was never taught, the slowness of both writing and reading lead me to take short cuts.
I read abridged versions of novels and often plagiarized when I was writing. It is sad but not uncommon.
I have long contended that people either do not have the time or find that the realities of political, economic, and social life are so complicated and over-whelming that to inquire, read about, and become knowledgable of such topics is almost impossible. Thus, nothing changes and things remain as is (the status quo).
